What You Need to Know... What is a Crash?

According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, a "crash" or "accident" is defined as an occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle in interstate or intrastate commerce in which any of the following conditions are met:

  1. A vehicle was towed from the scene.
  2. A fatality occurred.
  3. A person was injured and required immediate medical treatment away from the crash scene.

What is an Accident Register?

Motor carriers whose vehicles have been involved in an accident within the last 365 days are required to maintain an Accident Register. This register is essential for carriers involved in an FMCSA-reportable crash within the past year. A reportable crash is one in which a vehicle was towed from the scene or an injury or fatality occurred. Records related to these accidents must be retained for three years and should include the following details:

  • Date of the accident
  • City or town, or the nearest location to the accident, and the State where the accident occurred
  • Driver's name
  • Number of injuries
  • Number of fatalities
  • Whether hazardous materials, other than fuel spilled from the fuel tanks of the motor vehicle involved in the accident, were released

This information is crucial for compliance with safety regulations and maintaining accurate accident records.
